Since the externally powered drives seem to be working, I think that somehow the driver is not allowing enough power to get to axm1042 ports.

A few similar symptoms are analyzed and workarounds posted in the blog posted at the link below. I first thought it was a bad hard drive, but I tried the drive out on several other machines and it works just fine. Been using the ASUS asm1024 for windows 8.

I don’t get any indication of driver problems in Device Manager. I use the drivers posted and have not found any issues so far. The following link goes to driver 1. All of these same external disks worked just fine on this exact machine when it was running windows 7 Pro last week.
